Abstract

|
This study examines the symbolic meaning of folk painting from analytic psychological point of view and researches on the search for art therapeutic value, and aims to see if the symbolic meaning of folk painting is still meaningful today's art therapeutic sector. The method of study is focused on the domestic and foreign specialized books and relevant theses and the scope of study is focused on the folk paintings of the Joseon Dynasty period when the folk painting was popular among people and of which the data is abundant. Folk painting which is called as the painting of ordinary person among the paintings of Joseon Dynasty period is a representative painting that symbolizes universal and primal desires pursued by human. The folk painting deals with all life objects including legends and tale which are contents of imagination as well as reality. The folk painting comforted and pleased the people's lives by expressing root desires of human for longevity, wealth, fecundity of men, and sexual love with symbols with the meanings contained in the folk paintings. Also, the various materials appeared in the folk painting are universal spirits and symbols shared by human, and they help us discover unified self by understanding the original form, the contents of collective unconsciousness. The symbols of folk painting embody the original form of collective unconsciousness, and as the contents are charged with universality, they have the power to boost the emotion that hides in the human psychology. Therefore, such symbols reflect universal emotion for happy life of Korean people and it means that they have artistic art therapeutic value.
